First 5 El Dorado hosted the Lake Tahoe Collaborative’s Annual June Luncheon and Retreat at LTCC on June 11, 2012.

After lunch and networking, we heard a presentation by Elizabeth Blakemore on  “Emotionally Health Children: How Our Community Can Support Parents to Meet the Social & Emotional Needs of Children.”

Wendy David facilitated a review of Lake Tahoe Collaborative themes from 2011-12.  The group really liked having strategic topics for each meeting.  This new meeting format brought experienced speakers to the table and expanded our pool of participants.  It was important to have the City well represented at our meetings and we learned a lot about transportation and other local issues by deepening these connections with Angela Swanson, Tracy Franklin and Lauren Thomaselli. We appreciated the support of First 5 El Dorado and the Community Strengthening Grant to support administration for the Collaborative.  The email listerve is keeping us aware of gaps in services, changes in staffing, upcoming trainings and webinars, and funding opportunities.  The Collaborative served as the perfect Coalition to bring the Drug-Free Community Grant opportunity to our town and now the DFC Coalition meets right after our LTC meetings in the same room. We appreciated deepening our relationship with Barton and the Barton Foundation this last year.  We are full of gratitude for  Dr. Mireya Ortega’s Young Tahoe Smiles program and her contributions to children’s dental health.  Finally, the Day of the Young Child was well attended and well organized.  This event is so important and we are thankful for the generous support from community sponsors.

Finally, we brainstormed potential topics for 2012-13:

  • Play To Grow
  • Childhood Nutrition
  • Maternal Depression
  • Pre-Conception/Contraceptive Education
  • Updates:  Mental Health, Transportation, Senior Services, Foster Care
  • Focus on Foster Care and aging out of foster youth
  • We would like to reestablish a Police/Sheriff presence at LTC meetings
  • Incorporate the CARE Coalition and DFC members
  • Childcare providers and funding changes in CA, impacts of potential changes
  • Anti-bullying efforts and LTUSD response, Second Step Curriculum
  • Homelessness and Lack of Shelter
  • Add SLT representative to CAPC
  • Get LTC up on Facebook through First 5

Our next meeting is Monday, August 13, 2012 from 1-2:30pm at Boys& Girls Club at Al Tahoe School Site.  We do not meet during the month of July.
